- How do I recover missing files or accidentally deleted files? What if my camera showed an error and all my pictures are missing? Also, can I recover my data if my memory card or flash drive stopped working? Can I 'undelete' files?
NOTICE: SanDisk warranty does NOT provide reimbursement for data recovery services. This is specifically stated in our warranty. The SanDisk warranty covers the product itself, but does NOT cover any damages due to data loss. It is recommended to make regular backups of all your data and pictures.
For functional memory cards and flash drives
If your memory card or flash drive is still functional, you can try using a data recovery program. There is a high probability that your data can be recovered after you get an error while using the card, accidentally format it or delete files.SanDisk recommends using Rescue Pro and Rescue Pro Deluxe. These programs are very reasonably priced.
You can download a demo version of Rescue Pro and Rescue Pro Deluxe. These demo versions will show you what files can be recovered and provide a preview of the files for some common picture file types. The demo versions will require purchase of a license key to enable the feature to save the files. This is an excellent way to see if the program will work before you purchase.
After you recover your data, you can reformat your memory card or flash drive and use it again.
For Non-functional memory cards and flash drives
If your memory card or flash drive is no longer functional or cannot be accessed by your computer, then you will need to send it to a data recovery company. They will attempt to recover data on your memory card or flash drive. SanDisk recommends LC Technologies for this. LC Technologies specializes in SanDisk products.
Please refer to LC Technology Data Recovery for service description and current pricing.- How do I format my memory card, flash drive or device using a PC?

- Can I use an SDXC memory card with an SDHC host device?
- There are three main types in the SD memory card family. SD, SD High Capacity (SDHC™), and SD Extended Capacity (SDXC™). This article details the different specifications of all three types of SD memory cards and the speed class ratings and compatibilities that are different with each type.
SD capacities range from 128MB to 2GB
Default Format: FAT16
SD cards will work in all host devices that support SD, SDHC, or SDXCSD High Capacity (SDHC™) card is an SD™ memory card based on the SDA 2.0 specification.
SDHC capacities range from 4GB to 32GB
Default Format: FAT32
Because SDHC works differently than standard SD cards, this new format is NOT backwards compatible with host devices that only take SD (128MB - 2GB) cards. Most readers and host devices built after 2008 should be SDHC compatible.
To ensure compatibility, look for the SDHC logo on cards and host devices (cameras, camcorders, etc.)SD Extended Capacity (SDXC™) card is an SD™ memory card based on the SDA 3.0 specification.
SDXC capacities range from 64GB to 2TB
Default Format: exFAT
Because SDXC uses a different file system called exFAT and it works differently than standard SD cards, this new format is NOT backwards compatible with host devices that only take SD (128MB to 2GB) or host devices that only take SDHC (4GB to 32GB). Most host devices built after 2010 should be SDXC compatible. To ensure compatibility, look for the SDXC logo on cards and host devices (cameras, camcorders, etc.).NOTE: Internal card readers on laptops from 2008 and prior may NOT support SDXC cards. SDXC cards will work in SDHC compatible readers (not SD readers) if the computer OS supports exFAT.
Ultra High Speed, Phase I (UHS-I) bus design for SDHC and SDXC cards was added in SD spec 3.0. This is a design enhancement to increase the performance of SDHC/SDXC cards.
UHS-I specification defines two bus architecture options for up to 50MB/s (UHS-50) and 104MB/s (UHS-104) data transfer rates. These are theoretical maximum limits and actual maximum performance for a specific card is defined on it label or in advertising.
UHS is an enhancement to the original SD interface specifications. Host devices will obtain the UHS maximum speed when both the card and host device support UHS. Otherwise, the host device and card will use the slower SD maximum speed obtainable.
There is no compatibility problem using a UHS card with a non-UHS device. - Why can't I transfer a 4GB or larger file to my USB flash drive or memory card (PC & Mac)?
PC:
This is due to FAT32 limitation. Files larger than 4GB can NOT be stored on a FAT32 volume. Formatting the flash drive as exFAT or NTFS will resolve this issue.
WARNING: Backup your data. Formatting will delete all the data in your device.
SOLUTION 1 - Format in exFAT
exFAT file system that allows a single file larger than 4GB to be stored on the device. This file system is also compatible with Mac.Windows 7 and Mac OS 10.6.6 and higher are compatible with exFAT out of the box. Older operating systems may need a patch installed for exFAT compatibility.
NOTE: exFAT file system is NOT compatible with some host devices such as TV, game systems, older operating systems, car stereos etc.
Formatting a drive in exFAT
1. Double-click on My Computer.
2. Right-click on the flash drive or memory card, then select Format.
3. In the File System list, click exFAT.
4. Click Start.
5. Click OK to start formatting.
SOLUTION 2 - Format in NTFS
WARNING:
- Formatting the device as NTFS will make it unwriteable on a Mac computer. Most Mac computers can read NTFS, but not write.
- NTFS is a journaled file system, this creates more read/write activities. Therefore, it MAY decrease life expectancy of your device.
- Once the device is formatted as NTFS, you MUST use "Safely Remove Hardware" to remove your device.
STEP 1 - Optimize the flash drive for performance
1. Plug in the device to the PC.
2. Open The Computer Management Console
3. On the Left side select Device Manager
4. On the right side expand Disk Drives
5. Right-click on the flash drive, then select Properties.
6. Click the Policy tab.
7. Select Optimize for performance, then click OK.
STEP 2 - Format the flash drive
1. Double-click My Computer.
2. Right-click on the flash drive, then select Format.
3. In the File system list, click NTFS.
4. Click Start.
5. Click OK to start formatting.
Mac:WARNING: Formatting will erase all data on the device. Back up all your data before proceeding.
NOTE: When using a memory card, it is recommended to reformat the card in the camera instead of formatting it through your computer.
To format a device on your Mac OS X:
1. Double-click on Macintosh HD - or in the Finder menu click File > New Finder Window
2. Click the Applications folder - if using a Finder Window Applications will be in the left side menu.
3. Click the Utilities folder.

How to Read a Memory Card?
| Image/Features |
|---|
SpeedFor shooting medium to high megapixel photos and faster shot-to-shot performance, you need a fast write speed memory card. Speed is made up of two components: read and write speeds. Typically this is the same number unless called out separately. Write speed: How fast the photo can be written to the memory card so that you can take faster continuous shots. Read speed: How fast the photo can transfer to the computer from your card. VideoHigher class means higher quality. Higher class cards support higher bit-rates of video, and higher quality video recording. Check your camera/camcorder for recommended class rating. SanDisk ReliabilitySanDisk SD™, SDHC™, microSD™ and microSDHC™ memory cards are tested under harsh conditions.
Writable Label for Easy OrganizationThis SanDisk memory card has a blank writable white space on the front of the card, making it easy to identify your different cards. Use one memory card for all your vacation photos, and another for all your favorite music--the label makes it easy to see which is which at a glance. Rather than inserting cards into your digital device to review the content, simply look at the label and go.
FormatSelect the memory card that fits your device. SanDisk manufactures every major flash memory card format.
CapacityShooting lots of photos or video requires more space than ever. Choose higher capacity cards so you won’t risk missing the shot of a lifetime.
